Description
Henry Lawson’s “Up the Country” reveals that even though he often wrote poetry about the country, he was not particularly fond of it. I thought it would be fun to paint Henry trying to get back to the city as fast as possible – but it all goes wrong. Unfortunately, Henry is so desperate to leave the country behind, he drops his satchel of poems as he sprints for the departing train. Poor Henry does he make it or not?
The painting shows Grenfell Railway station. This in itself is an iconic historic building. I painted the Weddin Mountains and surrounding landscape in the background. The Silos are along the railway line and can be clearly seen as the old steam train leaves the platform. There are many small animals in the painting and homes nestled around the picture.
