“The Harvester” takes me back to my childhood. Growing up on a sheep, wheat farm, my dad spent many an early morning till late at night getting the wheat off the paddock. Even my sisters new how to drive the harvester. Mind you, unlike the painting the harvester we knew back then didn’t have a closed in comfy cab with air conditioning and radio. But dad didn’t need music because if you got close to the machine to hear above the engine during harvest you would often hear him singing hymns from the top of his lungs.

Harvest time is the backbone of rural life in Australia. Farmers lives sink or swim on a good or bad harvest. Through Fires, floods, grasshoppers, mice, and droughts it was always essential we tried to get the harvest in. Some years it was thin pickings especially after the grasshopper plague. One season I remember very well. Dad had broken his leg when riding the farm bike over the dam bank. Harvest was so important within the week we had several neighbours with their machines lined up at the gate. The Harvest would go on!
